Sausage Pasta

A quick and easy budget meal for families of all sizes and great for batch cooking too.

One thing you always hear when you have a big family is “your food shopping must cost a fortune”. And while yes, that can be true, the majority of big families will tell you that actually cooking in bulk works out a lot cheaper overall. Our weekly shopping bill is more in line with the average family of 4’s, despite having more than double that number of people in our family of 9. A good, cheap, yet tasty meal that helps keep that cost down, is :

Sausage Pasta

These prices are based on shopping the Tesco basic own range but prices will be similar wherever you shop.

You will need :

A bag of pasta 29p

14 sausages (I used them from a pack of 20 frozen sausages for £1) 70p

A tin of chopped tomatoes 28p

2 x small chopped red onions (from a bag of approx. 14 for 89p) 12p

A garlic baguette 32p

Approx. 1/4 of a block of mild cheddar cheese, grated (£1.79 for a block) 45p

Pepper, onion salt and garlic powder – store cupboard basics, costs would work out at pennies.

Total = £1.39 for the sausage pasta, £2.16 inc. the garlic bread & grated cheese for sprinkling on top.

This serves our family of 9 (4 adults, 2 teens, a 9yr old & 2 x 2yr olds), so works out at just 15p / 24p per person.

Method

Boil the pasta

Brown the sausages (I do this under the grill)

Chop & brown the onions

Add the chopped tomatoes & seasonings to taste to the onions & heat through

Once the sausages are cooked, cut into pieces and add to the chopped tomato mixture

Once the pasta is cooked, drain and return to the pan, then pour the sausage/tomato mix over the top & stir to combine

Serve with garlic bread & grated cheese

Enjoy xx
