Making Reindeer Food

As part of our family’s Christmas traditions, before bed on Christmas Eve we go outside into the garden and the children sprinkle Reindeer food along the garden path to help tempt Santa’s reindeer to our house.

Usually we just buy some Reindeer food from somewhere or make it on a visit to Santa’s Grotto, but this year we decided to have a go at making some ourselves at home.

I wanted a mix that would be safe for any garden wildlife (even though we do usually sweep it away once the kids are asleep).

For our recipe we used :

  • Porridge oats
  • Cornflakes, &
  • Edible Glitter

We used little polythene bags so that each child could make their own bag of Reindeer food to sprinkle on the ground.

They each scooped a mix of the oats and cornflakes into their bags…..

Then it was time to add the magic (the edible glitter). Just a pinch in each bag, to make the food glisten in the moonlight so that the Reindeer can see it from the sky.

Then give the bag a good shake to mix it all together. Finish off with a tie to the top of the bag.

Sparkly Reindeer food, all ready for Christmas Eve.
